Supporting the AAA Drive for Autism event with NASCAR

One of the greatest joys in my life is to observe people coming together in the face of challenges to take support and learn from each other. Yesterday's AAA Drive for Autism event with NASCAR was a perfect example of this.

In it's fifth year, this annual event invites families and friends of individuals with Autism to attend the race in style and comfort. In addition to seating in a reserved grandstand, there was a plush sensory room, exhibits from regional service providers, arts activities and a full lunch buffet. All of the proceeds from the event this year went to Autism Delaware.

I was honored to join the event this year, representing Special Travelers. It was a wonderful family event;

connecting, sharing and appreciating all the efforts of each other. A parent of an eighteen year old man with autism, who recently graduated with a high school diploma, asked me about the possibility of providing transportation to the culinary school where her son wishes to attend. I shared that it was not something I could provide, but suggested how she could approach the discussion with an organization of statewide resources nearby. She did, and walked away seeming quite satisfied with the options presented.

Many times there is actually a solution or another way nearby, we simply need the support and encouragement to take the next step. These thought-filled events, rooted in the intention to serve families offer that.

Congratulations to all those who worked so hard planning the Drive for Autism event yesterday - Well done, and I'm already looking forward to next year!
